Samsung Refrigerator Error Codes: Meanings & What to Check
Samsung refrigerator error codes 22C, 22E, 5E, 41C and more — what Samsung says each means, which models they apply to, and what to do.
Samsung refrigerators show error codes on the display (or Family Hub screen). The meanings below follow Samsung’s own US support documentation where it exists — and where it doesn’t, we say so plainly. Which codes your fridge can show depends on the model, so confirm against your model’s manual before buying parts.
Verification: Checked against the Samsung US Support article TSG10007315 (“Samsung refrigerator error codes”), fetched 2026-09-21 (HTTP 200). Confirmed on that page: 21E Freezer Fan Error; 22E/22C Fridge Fan Error (“This can potentially be caused by running the refrigerator with the door left open too long”; Samsung’s steps are to unplug, leave the doors open for a few hours, plug back in, and if the error returns, request service); 5E Fridge Defrost Sensor Error; and 41C (“These steps only apply to 3-Door French Door Family Hub models”). That page does not list 61C, dE/dE1/dE2, 24E or 25E — treat those as unverified.
From Samsung’s own page: “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator. Also, do not attempt any interaction with the panel to try to make the error code “go away.” Doing either of these will make it harder for a technician to diagnose and correct the issue.”
Safety first: unplug the refrigerator before removing any panel. Do not perform sealed-system, refrigerant, or line-voltage work. Never bypass door or lid interlocks. DIY repairs can void your warranty. This guide is informational only.
Samsung-verified error codes
22C / 22E — Fridge fan error
Manufacturer meaning: Samsung lists 22C/22E as a fridge fan error, and says it can be caused by running the refrigerator with the door left open too long.
Official first checks (Samsung’s steps):
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Leave the doors open for a few hours (to let the fan defrost/free up).
- Plug the fridge back in, close the doors, and resume normal use.
- If the error occurs again, contact Samsung’s Support Center for service.
Also make sure the unit isn’t packed so full that it stops the doors closing, and that the door gaskets make full contact all the way around.
5E — Fridge defrost sensor error
Manufacturer meaning: Samsung lists 5E as a fridge defrost sensor error (under its “more commonly received” codes list).
What Samsung’s page says to do: Samsung identifies 5E as a fridge defrost sensor error and directs owners to request service through its Support Center; its public error-code page does not provide a DIY diagnostic procedure for this code. Do not unplug the fridge unless Samsung support directs you to.
41C — 3-Door French Door Family Hub models only
Manufacturer meaning: Samsung lists 41C for 3-Door French Door Family Hub models. The published steps apply to those models only, not to every Samsung refrigerator.
Official first checks (Samsung’s steps):
- Confirm the latest software update has been downloaded and installed.
- The first time the error occurs after the update, tap OK.
- If the error occurs more than once after the update, visit Samsung’s Support Center to request service.
Model caveat: on other models, 41C may mean something different or may not appear at all — check your manual.
Codes Samsung doesn’t list publicly
61C — reported as ice-maker related (unverified / manual-check)
61C appears in owner reports in connection with the ice maker system, but Samsung’s error-code page (TSG10007315) does not list 61C, so there is no confirmed first-party meaning or model list. Samsung’s page says that for any code it does not list, you should visit its Support Center to request service. Do not diagnose from an unverified meaning. If you see 61C, check your model’s manual (Samsung manuals list error codes in the troubleshooting section) or contact Samsung support with your model number and the code before replacing anything.
dE / dE1 / dE2, 24E, 25E — unverified
These codes appear in owner reports but are not listed on Samsung’s error-code page (TSG10007315), and we could not verify their meanings against a first-party source. Do not diagnose from unverified meanings — confirm the code with your model’s manual or Samsung support before ordering any parts.
How to approach any Samsung fridge error
- Don’t unplug it to silence the code. Samsung states: “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator,” and not to interact with the panel to make a code “go away” — doing so makes it harder for a technician to diagnose. Power-cycle only if Samsung support directs you to.
- Follow the code-specific steps, not a generic checklist. Where Samsung gives code-specific guidance, use it (for example, the door-open/defrost steps under 22C/22E). Samsung’s page does not publish a general “check for ice” procedure, so don’t apply one to codes it doesn’t cover.
- Verify, then test: confirm the code’s meaning for your exact model, then test the part before buying anything.
When to call a licensed technician
Call a licensed technician when Samsung’s code-specific instructions direct you to service (as with 22C/22E and repeated 41C); when an unverified code cannot be confirmed for your exact model; and when diagnosis would require line-voltage, sealed-system, or refrigerant work. If you replace a part and the code still returns, a tech can diagnose the board instead of a parts-guessing game.

FAQ
Q: Samsung fridge error 22C — what does it mean? A: Per Samsung, 22C (also 22E) is a fridge fan error — it can be caused by running the fridge with the door open too long. Samsung’s fix: unplug, leave doors open a few hours, plug back in. If it returns, request service.
Q: What does 5E mean on my Samsung fridge? A: Per Samsung, 5E is a fridge defrost sensor error. Samsung’s public page gives the meaning only and directs owners to request service — it lists no DIY reset or repair step, so do not power-cycle or replace parts on the code alone; contact Samsung support with your model number.
Q: What does 41C mean on my Samsung fridge? A: Per Samsung, the 41C steps apply to 3-Door French Door Family Hub models — update the software, tap OK on the first occurrence, and contact Samsung if it recurs. On other models, check your manual.
Q: Will unplugging my Samsung fridge reset the error codes? A: Samsung advises against it: its page says “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator,” and that interacting with the panel to clear a code makes diagnosis harder for a technician. Only unplug when Samsung support directs you to. If a code comes right back, the fault is real — confirm the code’s meaning in your manual or with Samsung support before replacing parts.
