Samsung Washer 4E: Not-Filling Error & What to Check First
Short answer: Samsung lists 4E — also shown as 4C or nF — as a not-filling error: water is not entering the washer correctly. Samsung’s documented checks are the supply-hose placement, fully open valves, avoiding Flood Safe hoses, the drain-hose position, a one-minute power cycle, and the inlet filters. If those don’t resolve it, Samsung directs the owner to service.
What 4E means (per Samsung)
Per Samsung US Support, 4E is a not-filling error: water is not entering the washer correctly. Samsung lists 4C, nF, and 4E together as the not-filling family — the same fault under different display strings. The steps below are what Samsung presents; they are documented checks, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Code family & alternate displays
The display string depends on the model year; all three point to the same problem. If your panel shows a different string, check your model’s manual before acting.
Safe first checks (Samsung’s documented steps)
- Check supply-hose placement. Make sure both the hot and cold supply hoses are connected to the correct inlets (hot to hot, cold to cold) and that the hoses are not kinked.
- Open both water valves completely. Samsung notes that if you don’t connect the hot water line you can still get an error when the washer tries to use hot water — even on cycles labeled Cold. Leave the valves open while the washer runs.
- Do not use Flood Safe hoses. Samsung specifically warns against them.
- Check the drain-hose position. Samsung says it should be inserted 6–8 inches into the drain pipe and not kinked.
- Power-cycle the washer. Unplug it, or switch off its circuit breaker, for 1 minute; then restore power and try a cycle.
- Clean the inlet filters if debris is present. Samsung notes sediment can build up and block water from entering — to check, you’ll need to turn the water-supply valves back off, disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer, and look inside the washer’s connections. Remove the filters carefully and clear any debris, then refit the filters and hoses and reopen the valves.
Water prerequisite: before disconnecting any inlet hose, shut off the water-supply valves (hot and cold). Unplugging the washer does not shut off the water. Restore filters and connections and confirm they are secure before reopening the valves; follow your model’s manual.
Diagnostic branches
- Documented checks done, code returns. Samsung’s user checks are exhausted at this point, and Samsung directs the owner to request service. Further diagnosis may require a qualified technician.
- Code returns after the power cycle. A code that comes straight back after the checks suggests the underlying condition remains and needs further troubleshooting.
- No water entering the drum at all. Work the supply path in Samsung’s order — hose placement, valves, the Flood Safe warning, drain-hose position, power cycle, then inlet filters.
Do not replace this part yet
Don’t order an inlet valve, water-level part, or any other component before the documented checks are done. Samsung presents these as checks (hose placement, valves, drain-hose position, power cycle, filters) rather than a failed part. Confirm any part against your exact model number before buying — parts are not universal across Samsung washer families and years.
When to stop and call a technician
If the checks don’t resolve it, Samsung directs the owner to service — have the model number ready. Further diagnosis may require a qualified technician. Never perform exposed live-voltage testing; parts must be serviced with the power disconnected.
