Samsung Washer 5E: No-Drain Error & What to Check First

✓ Verification: Manufacturer-verified against Samsung US Support (2026-09-15)

Applies to: Samsung washers. 5E/5C/SE/SC are the same no-drain family; the removable pump filter step applies to front-loaders only.

⚠️ Safety first: unplug the appliance before opening it. Don't work on gas or sealed refrigerant systems, never bypass lid/door locks, and if a step needs live voltage, gas, or a sealed system it's a technician job. DIY can void your warranty.

Short answer: Samsung lists 5E — also shown as 5C, SE, or SC depending on model year — as a no-drain error: water is not draining at the correct speed, or not at all. Samsung’s own no-drain guide starts with the washer level and the drain-hose installation, then the pump filter on front-loaders only. Samsung does not name a failed pump as the remaining cause — if its documented checks don’t fix it, Samsung directs the owner to service.

What 5E means (per Samsung)

Per Samsung US Support, 5E is a no-drain error: water is not draining from the washer at the correct speed, or not at all. Samsung lists 5E, SE, 5C, and SC together as the no-drain family — the same fault under different display strings. Samsung’s no-drain guide notes that incorrect drain-hose installation is the most common reason for drain issues and that service is rarely required — so the installation and level checks come first.

Code family & alternate displays

The display string depends on the model year; all four point to the same problem. If your panel shows a different string, check your model’s manual before acting.

Safe first checks (Samsung’s documented steps)

Work these in order. Samsung splits them by machine type.

  1. Turn off the washer and check it is level — all washers. Samsung notes a washer that isn’t level may not drain correctly.
  2. Inspect the drain-hose installation — all washers. Samsung’s checks: the hose must not form an airtight connection; must not be kinked, bent, or damaged; must be at least 18 inches high (24 inches for a wash basin); must be no higher than 96 inches (35 inches for a wash basin); must sit 6–8 inches into the standpipe or sink (Samsung: not less than 6 inches, not more than 8 inches) and be secured so it will not slip down farther; and must not use a drain-hose extension kit. Height and insertion depth are different measurements — Samsung checks both. Samsung also cautions not to remove the screw that holds the drain hose against the back of the washer.
  3. Clean the pump filter — front-loaders only. Samsung states this step applies to front-loaders only; top-load washers do not have a user-removable pump filter. On a front-loader it sits behind the bottom-front access door — drain the standing water first, then pull out coins and lint. Have a towel and a shallow pan ready.

Hot water: if a hot cycle (for example, Sanitize) ran recently, Samsung warns the water in the washer may be very hot — allow about one hour for it to cool before draining or doing filter work, to avoid injury. Unplug the washer before opening the filter access door.

Diagnostic branches

  • Documented checks done, still not draining. Samsung’s user checks are exhausted at this point, and Samsung directs the owner to request service. Further diagnosis may require a qualified technician.
  • Code returns after a power cycle. Unplug the washer, wait a few minutes, plug it back in, and run a drain/spin cycle. A code that returns after that suggests the underlying condition remains and needs further troubleshooting.
  • Water left standing in the drum. Treat it as a no-drain problem and work the path in Samsung’s order — level, drain-hose installation, then (front-load) the pump filter.

Do not replace this part yet

Don’t order a drain pump (or any part) before the level, drain-hose, and filter checks are done. Samsung’s guide puts the installation and level checks ahead of any component, and does not state a pump failure as the cause. Confirm any part against your exact model number before buying — parts are not universal across Samsung washer families and years.

When to stop and call a technician

If the documented checks don’t resolve it, Samsung directs the owner to service — have the model number ready. Further diagnosis may require a qualified technician. Never perform exposed live-voltage testing; parts must be serviced with the power disconnected.
